What considerable success has Europe had in facing down rogue nations who are trying to acquire nuclear weapons? Can you name any?

None but neither have we.

The U.S. faced down Libya and shut down the Pakistani underground nuke market. The U.S. faced down Russia. The U.S. has had successes.

Our successes you trumpet are questionable. Russia and Libya were collapsing under there own economic mishaps. Economic desperation prompted them to be more willing to compromise. We did turn around Pakistan through economic carrots.....the same thing the EU is trying to do. However, was never the enemy to us that Russia and Libya were.

Europe? What successes?

None. However, as the emerging EU, its been successful in getting nations who want to join to be more sensitive to human rights issues and effective in getting them to get their economic affairs in order by offering economic plums. It may work with Iran or it may not. However, if they don't succeed its not likely the US will be any more successful. The situation with Iran is much like the situation with N. Korea. The Iranians feel very threatened by the US and they have reason to feel that way. We have worked against their best interests for over 20 years. Our past diplomatic miscalculations/subterfuge with Iran....primarily under Reagan.....are coming back to haunt us.

And herein lies the problem.........Americans don't much know what their gov't does overseas so they don't understand why a gov't like Iran holds so much hostility towards us. So when their current gov't decides to take invasive maneuvers against an Iran, they, the people, are all for it. Americans need to learn that there is a cause and effect in the world, and that we are part of that process.

So tell me, MM, what do you think about our past diplomatic screwups with Iran haunting us 20 years later?
