Presenting the truth in a truthful manner is the most important duty of the press. They failed to do their most important duty. I agree. The press as an institution is far more important than any individual. They are a very important cog in our way of life. They have to be free and independent and they have to have the courage to remain so. Wrt CBS, I think they caved to popular sentiment. The work that Rather and crew did was poor, sloppy, and of not very high standard. They could not authenticate the documents and they should not have gone public with them. But, CBS caved into popular sentiment in suggesting the documents were forged. There is no proof the documents were forged. The right wing bloggers did a great job presenting their case and overwhelmed MSM. The stuff with the fonts is a lot of bs. In days when there are word processors, who knows what is original. Documents are stored in a number of different formats. They can be copied. They can be edited. They can be reprinted over and over again and not necessarily on the device where the thoughts originated. Dan Rather and company did a poor job trying to authenticate the documents. They claimed they went to four different experts. Two of them said they couldn't authenticate the documents. No one said they were forged. If CBS had the courage, they should complete their investigation and find out if they were forged, who did it and prosecute them. What they did was to take the easy way out, admit "errors" were made and allowed the world to think the documents were forged. I think Dan Rather used to sign off with the word, "courage". I think he should have said, "gutless".
