I agree with you on that. There is a premise hinted at that is probably not true. However there where other arguments made for the private accounts most notably that they would allow for an adiquate return for future retirees without having too high of tax rate on future workers. Also this type of rhetoric is less objectionable than comparisons to Hitler, or Kim Il Sung. Its just standard politics. Of course standard politics can often have greater practical effect than odious comparisons, so even if it isn't as "icky", it is probably more important to think about.

I support the personal account idea anyway, but the tactic could be (and has been) used to support plenty of ideas I don't support.

As for Iraq and 9/11 the use of tactic is a little less clear. Claiming that Iraq is a continuation of the war on terrorism is not a claim that Saddam's regime caused 9/11 to happen. OTOH it might be an attempt to put that idea in ignorant or gullible people's minds.
