I subscribe to the theory of theistic evolution -- God put the whole shebang into motion billions of years ago, and is not actively involved in tweaking things. I can't prove that God started the process, but it doesn't matter, because the process is exactly what we can perceive using our own senses and scientific instruments.

As the Pope said, truth cannot contradict truth. What we see with our own eyes, what we perceive using scientific instruments, is the truth, created by God. The Bible, which was written by men, cannot contradict scientific truth. Whether you believe the Bible was inspired by God or not is not relevant to this concept. Truth cannot contradict truth. That's axiomatic.

What I don't get is why fundamentalist creationists demand that we keep an open mind about evolution, but a closed mind about creation.

Somehow I don't think some sorry derivative is what the image-and-likeness proponents had in mind.

Certainly they don't mean an exact copy, let alone something better then the original.

Edit - I've heard one interpreation that "image and likeness" meant sentience/inteligence rather than a literal image. Not all the "image and likeness" crowd are Biblical literalists.
