re: How is the current system encouraging savings? If anything, the current system is discouraging savings, simply because most people think their SS taxes are going into the mythical "lockbox."

First, I can't believe that you are arguing for a whole new welfare entitlement. Your "conservative" buddies might not agree.

When you deposit money in a bank, do you think they put it in a "lockbox" with "Ten" written on the front? No, they "owe" you the money. When you buy homeowners insurance, does it go into a lockbox? No, your money pays off other claims.

The only difference is that the Federal government is running a huge deficit. THAT'S the problem, and it's a separate issue. You can (mostly) blame Bush and a Republican congress for that. Don't blame Social Security.

re: If it's all about preventing poverty among our seniors, let's pay for that out of the general budget. At least revenues from there come from a progressive income tax structure. SS, on the other hand, is a regressive tax. Change it to a progressive tax, and you might as well just blend SS into the actual budget.

It's a regressive tax but a progressive benefit.
