" but I want to believe that politics are cleaner here than in OK. "

I don't have any insight into Washington or Oklahoma politics, so I don't know. We generally don't see much in the way of down-right nasty politics here. Most of the elections are pretty boring. With Kinky Freidman running for governor here, next year might be a lot more entertaining than usual...

Hmm, I wonder if he will sing "They Don't Make Jews Like Jesus Anymore".

But, again, I am talking about national politics. There is a long history of dirty tricks on both sides. Pretending it isn't happening, like Kerry did, is dumb. The Dims did it twice in a row with the same guy. That definitely shows an inability to learn. Heck, Smirk dropped the "compassionate conservative" facade because even he realized that was a stick he could be beat with...

re: There is a blue state perception that politics are dirtier in the red states.

Two places I've lived the longest are Chicago and Florida.

I'll abstain.

There is a blue state perception that politics are dirtier in the red states.

And a red state perception that politics are dirtier in the blue states. Whether either or neither are right the perceptions are probably mostly bias.

I am just about certain that there is more dirty politics in the county in the blue state I used to live in than the county I live in now, but its hard to project two counties to the whole country. Trying to do so would be a generalization based on too little evidence. I don't think real hard evidence is available. Anecdotal evidence and unsupported claims are available all over the place but are unreliable.
