I think "most people" don't realize that if they were in the shoes of the judge, they'd do exactly what the judges do, only the results might be different. And, to them, different results that suit their own beliefs are acceptable, while different results that don't suit their own beliefs are not acceptable. But they pretend to themselves that it's not actually personal preferences and prejudices that are involved, there is some superior abstract principle that only they know how to adhere to.
