....over 30 years to plan ahead for the deficit. What is everyone worried about........set aside a little each year between now and then, and put it into an interesting bearing account

By 2042 the current SS system is scheduled to require over half of the federal budget. That means no money left over for Amtrak or any of the other federal boondoggles.

Let’s not do anything to fix SS. It is the best way to expunge the welfare and great society waste from the federal government. Instead of trying to cauterize the wounds, we jest bleed the problem programs out. It will be like 1800's and prior medical care. There will be no money for anything but SS and Medicare.

"SSA says 2018 is when net cash flows will be negative. 2042 is the date the SS Trust Fund will be depleted. "

That's still not bad. We have.....what....over 30 years to plan ahead for the deficit.

Not really. 1 - We have to plan for 2018 as much as we do for 2042. When the SSA needs to get money back from the treasury we have to figure out how we are going to handle it. Also you have to start implementing the plan long before there is a problem because if you wait until last minute you get things like sudden 25% cuts in benefits.
