With interest rates increasing, what sectors will be better for VoIP. That's the question. No doubt VoIP is a growth area.

There are a couple of sectors that are quite frothy for VoIP sales, but with interest rates rising I would think it is prudent if VoIP marketing/sales folks consider expanding their focus towards other sectors that are less sensitive to rising interest rates. At some point, the frothy sectors will run their course. Wonder when. Also wonder what the global pattern of interest rate increases are for the rest of the world.

Regards,
Amy J

Well I agree with you totally. I thought that years ago but the old phone companies want to delay installing fiber on poles as long as possible. I am getting a kick out all the cable companies now rolling out phone service... DSL wouldn't exist if the phone companies had not been so stubborn but I guess I can't blame them for not wanting to roll equipment to install fiber.... They just want that copper pair to last as long as possible! Labor is expensive but I see a lot more cable trucks rolling around town than phone company trucks..Guess who's making more money??!!

Eventually it will all be Fiber... there are just so many advantages with it!

Cisco is a mature growth company.. I just don't see demand for bandwidth growing that fast. The only way to get that Growth and demand for new generations of IP gear is Video in all it's different flavors to the house. That is going to take awhile.. My guess is at least 10 years... But it will happen.

Phone companies... What phone companies??

All of the major telecom companies are getting rid of their circuit switched networks and replacing them with IP networks. In addition, all corporations are getting rid of their old PBX phone networks and getting IP phone networks. In addition, consumer VOIP is starting to ramp up very fast, since the economics are so compeling.

Intuitively, it doesn't add up.

If VoiP is replacing circuit switched networks, AND the economics are compelling (I guess this implies VoiP systems do the same thing for less), then adoption of VoiP would shrink the total telecom spending budget, not drive growth. It sounds like you can spend $7 on VoiP systems and get the same thing that used to cost you $10 on a circuit switched system. That's great for pure play VoiP companies (which don't exist!), but it causes the whole spending pie to shrink, not grow.

On the other hand, if VoiP DOES cause the whole telecom equipment pie to grow, how can the economics be compelling since it just does the same thing as legacy circuit switched systems?

It's gotta either shrink the total communcations system pie (which I think it does) or it can't have compelling economics since it doesn't provide a new service, it just replaces an older system with the same service.
