Well, you understand that President Bush is hopeful that the medicare prescription bill as it comes into full being in 2,006 may actually REDUCE the cost of healthcare by treating diseases earlier and with non invasive technicues. I presume you know what open heart surgery costs, if that could be restricted using aggressive drug therapy imagin the savings just in that. jdn

Allen...

Appoint a bipartisan commission to study the situation, giving them the necessary time to do a thorough job and allowing them to consider all the options. Then implement the solution they come up with.

This has already been done.

Actually, the shortfall in Social Security should only be temporary, though lasting a couple of decades.

Requiring 75% of the federal budget by 2075. Based on my understanding it is not transitory. There are things we can do to change the math. One solution would be to increase retirement age.

Yes, you are correct, MediCare is much worse. If we cannot make the necessary changes to patch SS, how can any politicians be expected to address MediCare?

If one does not start bailing water from a sinking ship soon enough, it sinks.

President Bush may not have understood the extent of the problem with MediCare in 1998 when he began stumping on fixing Social Security. It takes a while to get a big ship turned around. He probably is correct that he needs to focus on one issue and leave the next one to future Presidents.
