We can agree that Hitler was a sick f#&k. I hope that we can agree that he was an authoritarian. (It seems to be so accepted that even the movie Boys from Brazil makes it a central part of the plot.)

While you claim that he was not leftist, I claim he was no rightist. If we are to agree on this, it would require the conclusion that on the whole he was a centrist politically. He certainly was an opportunist.

What I said is that Hitler was more right than left. The truth is he was crazy and he was dangerous......that makes his ideology a distant second.

I have nothing against conservatives. I myself am fiscally conservative. What worries me about Bush is that he is fiscally irresponsible, and in spite of all their rhetoric, I don't think some of the Bushies have a strong commitment to our democratic institutions.

As you pointed out, while he favored gassing Jews, in the end he gassed just about every type and stripe of person. I think we can agree on this as well.

Do we agree that the free world has a moral obligation to try to prevent another Hitler?

Yes, of course. Why do you think people worry whenever someone takes on some of Hitler's characteristics.

OT - How would you rate Hussein compared to Hitler? IMO he was not as dangerous when he was stopped. Saddam had learned to use some of the same techniques.

Saddam was a small fish in a relatively small pond.......and not all that bright. I suspect Hitler was a genius.....not something I like saying.......after all, he deserves no praise. But the sucker knew how to play people.

The one I fear is Osama. He too looks to be a genius. This month's National Geographic shows a town near the town from where Osama's family comes. If you could see his origins, you would realize that he is probably is as austere and barren inside as the landscape is in Yemen. The desert leaves little room for emotion. To survive, you have to be as hard as it is.
