Unfortunately for this view, Bill Clinton quite clearly declared that Social Security (SS) was in crisis, and he was supported by the entire Democrat establishment. It is disingenuous to now suddenly claim SS is fine simply because a Republican wishes to do something about the crisis both Democrats and Republicans have claimed has existed for years on end. I think SS ought to be abolished altogether and that the current debate is flawed at its roots. But I think the Democrat position is purely one of dishonor and as such ought not be entertained until it is reconciled with the prior Democrat view. There is too much doubletalk in Washington.

Nobody is ramming this through quickly. We are discussing a solution that will add ten, fifteen, twenty or more years to the sustainability of an out of control train wreck of a federal program. Those who think the answer is to pay more out of the existing system had better hope that generation-X never gets control of government.

You can agree to disagree that there is an impending problem. Unfortunately, for your side Clinton destroyed your plausible deniability. Democrats signed on to his addressing the issue, but now that a Republican is trying to fix it Democrats are against any solution. Do you think anyone would be fooled when is suddenly became a priority in a Democrat administration. The American public is not as stupid as you all think they are.
