It is interesting to see Intel leading the way in basic R & D. This function was the domain of Bell Labs and IBM Research Labs, the two entities which got their funding from the monopolistic profits enjoyed by AT&T and IBM. In the last decade the profits at these two organisations have dwindled, cutting off the basic research funding.

Let us hope that Intel has filed the appropriate patents because clearly there is no prior art. The ultimate potential here is to replace electrons with photons. The potential is simply unbounded. Assuming this becomes manufacturable, a patent on this technology would be equivalent to a patent on the transistor in today's semiconductor market. The royalties alone would make Intel the world's largest and most profitable company in history.

" Bell Labs often failed to do."

THAT is just not true. I just bet you are forgetting who gave us the Princess Phone and ISDN (which by combining two wires would produce the equivalent of 2, count 'em, 2 56K modems, less about 28K overhead???? Hmmmmmm????
