Good point.

It is well known that Bush tried to sabotage the election of Chavez in order to keep American cronies at the wellhead for Venezuelan oil.

Failing that, we see the ongoing disinformation campaign in order to set the table for what may be tried next.

Meddling in South American politics has been a hallmark of GOP administrations dating back to Eisenhour.

With the elevation of Negroponte to info czar, we will have an old South American terror tool running CIA.

Look for more of these Chavez horror stories to circulate.

I would say if he can make Vz a safe place for mining investment and safe from the terrors of Columbian-type back-woods guerillas then he deserves some respect as a miracle worker. I think the US saw in Chavez a sort of latter day Fidel and got very nervous. Then US has substantial needs for Vz oil, and naturally works to make sure government officials listen up to their needs. Chavez did not seem so corruptible, and his press has been bad ever since. I note they are quiet about him these days. It would not surprise me if the uprisings early on were sponsored by outside interests as well as the old guarde. The incentive to quell them was tied to resumption of the oil supply.

Yes, I think that getting into a deep debate on South American politics would reveal that there is a lot more dirt behind the people that the US has backed there than there is behind Chavez, not that I am one calling Chavez a saint. The referenced articles on Turkey and Venezuela have strung together some fringe assertions and cherry-picked facts to weave stories to attack the leaders and people in those countries as deluded or dangerous, no doubt simply because they are not currently in step with US policy. The same journalistic methodology could really paint a far worse picture of things traced back to the US government, and the same for a large number of its close allies, whether or not those countries are good countries to invest in or not.
