"However, I do not believe it gets to the heart of the religious rights' argument.

What is at the heart of the religious right's argument and what is at the center of the fanatical left's agenda is neither resolvable in congress nor sensible for reasonably intelligent beings seeking to determine a fair, just, and peaceful coexistence.

The problem with liberals is that they see everyone's side. Time for liberals to stop being so understanding, and start standing up for basic rights.

I agree with that. Kerry's position on Civil Unions was completely a sell out to Bush's proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

If Kerry had any balls at all he would have said he was for human rights, and for the right of anyone to marry who they wish. And then he should have said to Bush, if you're for an amendment to the constitution, could you at least show us how that amendment would read? Bush never intended to push for such an amendment...it was pure political posturing.

I'm still befuddled about the difference between a civil union and marriage. Is it church sanctification that makes the difference? I thought the church was to have no hand in government?
