What exactly is the difference between a gay union and a gay marriage, other than the words union and marriage?

As to gay marriage, I don't know of any mainstream conservative who objects to the concept of gay unions. I don't care what gays do. I do not want the term "marriage" redefined to mean something it has never meant. Marriage is a specific legal term that has broad application throughout state and federal statutes. It is idiotic to suggest we should change its meaning.

Well written IMO.
