"Do us all a favor and clearly explain the differences...ok?"

Maybe you just skim my posts for a sound bite to respond to. I have written long explanations to compare the similarities and differences so your complaint is confusing. I will try to concisely do that now. Let me know if you still don't get it.

Similar: Marriage and a legal union defined with a different term such as 'civil union' may each be used to simply declare the legal bond existing for a couple. Other similar possibilities for legal status exist for alternatives, like groups, who want to contract with each other for legally bound obligations and benefits with regards to their relationship.

"I have stated that maybe you're suggesting marriage is reserved for churches to bestow. ...

I am not suggesting that.

Many religions and non-religous sub-culture groups that don't have churches use the marriage term. It is historically and culturally a heterosexual and community based term. Likewise Gays may use the marriage term as well but have a different connotation of what that means with regard to their identity than the traditional heterosexual meaning.

Differences: The meaning of the term as it is traditionally applied is broader than simply a legal union between two people. It is at the heart of defining the world view of heterosexual community members. This is different than it could be applied to gay unions. Hetero-sexual family values define themselves in part as the progeny coming from a line of inheritence with a vision to carry that forward in time; to extend that relationship into community development and connections, and as an essential component of their vision of the future for their progeny. Gay couples must define themselves according to and in reaction to the circumstances of the culture they are currently exposed to. They must re-define that for any era of their experience. Hetero-sexuals must do that as well but they filter it through their standard world view, which identifies with the community that was, is, and will be. The world view of gay families is one generational. They may or may not extend that relationship into an identity with the current identity of the community at large.

Marriage and Gay marriage: So if the state sanctioned legal definition of Marriage encompasses gay marriage, the state must deny that the validity of the broader definition of hetero-sexual family world view. This has an impact on family centered communities that significantly impacts the 'what will be' community. So the politics of the change are much broader than simply defining what is a state sanctioned legal couple and what is not. The bottom line is that it is a coercive movement intended to impose something on the heterosexual community. It is not necessary to do that for all things legal to be made fair and equitable. ... so why is it important to you? ... you have declared that it is not but then you return to your insistance that it must happen justified by the only viable approach to achieving equal rights ... which is not true.

The simple solution is to define a legal couple using terminology that does not involve the broader implications of world views. Let people and groups define marriage as they wish but get the state out of the business of determining which definition of 'marriage' is to be legally imposed on all.

None of the corrupt political authorities from either side want the simple solution. You have picked a side ... get it now?
