I have no illusion that there is perfect scorecard where one can tot up the plusses and minuses and come up with a single score that says "we invade country A, we don't invade country B."

You know, I'm sure, the story of the starfish on the beach and the woman tossing them back.

Since a few others here may not be as astute as you, though, for their benefit I'll tell the story.

A man was walking along the beach one morning. After the storm the night before and the low morning tide, the beach was littered with tens of thousands of starfish, slowly dying in the morning sun.

A woman was walking along tossing starfish back into the water.

The man looked at her scornfully and said "what's the point of that? There are thousands of starfish dying. How does what you're doing help?

She looked down at the starfish she had just picked up, tossed it in the water, and said quietly to the man "it helped that one."

Maybe we can't help every country on earth. But we can help the one we picked up to save.
