I don't think it's fair to paint all captains or cruise line companies with the same broad brush. And I don't believe in blanket stereotyping.

There are very reputable individuals commanding these ships who go to great lengths to remain within the law. They do so in order to protect their certification, protect the reputation of their employer and ensure the employment of hundreds of individuals. There are also many sea captains who respect and value the beauty and viability of clean oceans who wouldn't do anything to degrade or destroy that environment.

I don't doubt for one minute that some captains order the discharge of sewage, garbage and bilge water in open waters, and I'm hoping that future technology will be developed which will be capable of spotting such behavior. In the mean time public pressure must bare the burden of reminding sea going corporations that they are being held to high standards.
