Fyo,

Still a shocking difference, IMHO, and something AMD marketing has completely failed to capitalize on.

I have been dismayed about this for the longest time. Just as an experiment, try to find information on AMD site alerting potential buyer about this important feature of AMD processor and a concrete comparison to competitor's product, highlighting this difference.

AMD has GOT to take advantage of the extreme power differential between A64 and P4. I think it should be a major part of its Win64 advertising blitz, something that is sorely needed. I mean AMD should say something like:

If you had a gas guzzler and could upgrade it to a Ferrari, and the Ferrari used less gasoline and cost less than your old car, would you do it? Well, you can do that with your computer. Microsoft XP 64 was invented by Microsoft and AMD to give pure power to your PC or notebook. [Microsoft would agree to this and pay for most of the ad.] AMD built a new CPU engine for PCs that harnesses that 64-bit power without wasting electricity. Microsoft XP 64 plus AMD Athlon 64 = pure power excitement!

That's why Athlon 64 PCs made by (insert names of AMD OEMs) deliver 64-bit performance using 70W less power than the competition.

That's why an Athlon 64 laptop runs (insert number, 20?) degrees cooler on average than a Pentium 4 notebook. All Athlon 64 computers also have hardware virus protection. You got rid of your gas guzzler, do the same with your computer. Upgrade to Athlon 64. (jingle)

[insert almost incomprehensible jibber-jabber -- "comparison based on blah, blah, blah. Power consumption measured by blah, blah blah...]

PS - the power differential can only be MORE EXTREME on dual-core chips, despite the apparently small 30W difference between the TDP numbers.

70W at the socket is probably equivalent to 45-50W at the CPU, so that kind of validates Tom's numbers. At one point I questioned whether his measurement took into account the multiphase nature of the voltage regulation circuit.
