"stealing oil was the goal."

You can relax, Ralph, in the certain knowledge that I am standing watch here in Montana, monitoring the situation for any sign of the troop build-up, and will provide you with the first news bulletin (via pm on SI) immediately upon their moving off the debarkation point and beginning their assault across the border into Alberta to grab an even larger pool of oil than Iraq.

>stealing oil was the goal.

I think that there were actually a multiplicity of reasons for moving into Iraq, and a united front of these interests pushed the deal through. Certainly people like Cheney and Rumsfeld were motivated by control of oil, business contracts for their friends, and the power that went with it. Wolfowitz, Feith and Perle had additional motives in assisting the interests of the state of Israel, which they have strong ties to the right wing of. Bush and Rice seem to see it as having elements of a religious crusade, fulfilling God's will and bringing democracy and enlightenment to the Arab masses. Right wing think tanks with heavy funding from the weapons industry helped promote the fear and propaganda element with the help of right wing media conglomerates that made the war popular with the public. Spineless congressmen got their political campaign funding and backing from groups representing money from all of the above interests, and couldn't wait to rubberstamp their approval.
