I'd go along with most of the qualifications you put on the death penalty: I support it when all defendants are given quality legal representation, and the rules for what crimes deserve the death penalty would be fair and consistent across the United States. No southern states executing a bunch of blacks for crimes white people don't get the same penalty for! And there would have to be clear, concise evidence like DNA evidence--no circumstantial evidence cases really should get the death penalty because there is some doubt always about those. I'd take exception only to the universal across the US part. Many states will choose not to have a death penalty at all and that's their choice. The part about the south is outdated IMO - blacks vote, hold office, and sit on juries now.

The reason I was surprised you support the death penalty is I noticed you didn't mention it or take part in the discussion when the death penalty was recently discussed on this thread.

And I can't help but wonder if you stayed out of it (i.e. censored yourself) unconsciously to maintain peaceful relations with your friends.
