One other note, those who support racial equity in executions should remember that while 54% of murders are committed by blacks, only 44% of those executed are black. They ought to be careful what they wish for.

The death penalty subject is not one that I really know a lot about, Brumar. I am not the most articulate representative of my position, by a long shot. Having said that, I would never, ever sit out a discussion, even subconsciously, to maintain peaceful relationships with my friends. No one really even knows who my friends here are! I think some people would be surprised if they knew who all the people at SI I have some sort of out-of-public friendly communications with are--they are not all death penalty opponents, or even liberals. And it was I who pointed out publicly to Ionesco all the differences of opinion I have re her positions. Certainly if I were trying to keep any of my beliefs secret, I wouldn't have popped up with that post.

There have been about three times in the last couple of months where I was ill or away for the weekend where I missed a lot of Feelies posts, and finally abandoned trying to go back and read them all. So if things were discussed then, I missed them. I also often do not comment on debates here if I think the people already involved are doing a really complete job of it, and I don't feel like I have anything special to add.

Re the death penalty, I think states should be allowed not to have one, but I also think that states that do have it should be consistent. While I am sensitive to the states' rights argument, taking a life is so serious that it doesn't make sense to me that Americans in different states should be subject to different rules. And I don't think that in the deep south, or the border states and Texas, much has changed in the sense of many, many more minorities being sentenced to death than whites are for crimes that are similar. Although if you have evidence that I am wrong, I would certainly consider it.
