Italy is old Europe anyway. If we are going to close military bases, why not embassies.

Which reminds me...I think they're doing the ten year review of military bases/installations. Last time I looked, we had a military contingent in Vatican City. Not sure why they are there; I don't think we conduct joint military exercises with the Vatican.

I've been thinking about putting together an e-mail to my Congressional reps to suggest we could get rid of the contingent in the Vatican City. The other base I think we could close without a loss is the US Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay. The Cuban missile crisis ended a while back. If Cuba were to invade we could probably fend them off before they hit Key West.
