Ha! Those parents are smart! They are entertaining the birthday guests in THREE different public places. If any of them get really out of line, the movie ushers, restaurant servers and bookstore clerks will have to deal with them. I also am intrigued by the bookstore part--is it possible a live act is entertaining at that time? I have seen some really interesting performers in bookstores, actually.

When I was a little girl, birthday parties consisted of a home-baked cake and pin the tail on the donkey games. Then a romp on the swing set and running around the backyard full of sugar. There is one photo where I put a leather wastepaper basket on my head at my party, and my long ringlets are sticking out. I hated it when my mother tied my hair up in rags to achieve that look, but in retrospect it was quite cute . . .
