An economic pipe dream(as I'm sure you know) as the US needed to build up Europe in order to have a place to sell it's goods, self interest at work. A military pipe dream since the USSR was anathema to US military thought. A political pipe dream since Karl Marxs writings were and still are anathema to US political thought.
