If a week ago we heard that one of the following were leaving QCOM, which would cause you/me/anyone the greatest concern: Paul Jacobs Sanjay Jha I don't need to think about it very long. I wouldnt describe this as a "dream come true" as Jim did, but I do realize that Paul has some attributes that probably make him more suited for the CEO role than Sanjay has shown. He is definitely a big idea person. He seems to have been the driving force behind things like BREW, MedioFLO, and the Iridigm purchase. My equivocal reaction to Paul's promotion is probably at least partly related to my conservativeness with regards to Q's cash flow. I generally like it when companies I invest in focus on areas where they have a competitive advantage. Q hasnt proven particularly adept at being an operator and the jury is still out on their display efforts. OTOH, for Qualcomm to still be a growth story in 2010, they are going to need precisely the types of big ideas that Paul has gone after. I thought he gave an interesting answer to a question at the end of the press conference. He was asked to talk about an area of difference between him and Irwin (Altman said it was that Paul didnt say the words dater and Korear <g>)....his response was that his backgrounds was from the applications side of things while IJ has started in RF. He gave the example of MedioFLO where the application had actually driven the creation of the airlink specifications. Rather than just maximizing capacity, it had been important to minimize latency and provide the ability to quickly channel surf. I think that QChat and VoIP are other areas like this and I would imagine that more applications driven projects are going to be seen in the future. So, in sum, I see Paul as a high-risk, high-reward type CEO. It is entirely possible that another CEO might have served Q better over the short-term, but if Paul's ideas play out, Q could be better served in 2010 and beyond. Just my two cents.... Slacker
