"However, I do think a critical mass is being reached in the region."

I dunno. I am pretty pessimistic. More likely is the more ominous meaning of the phrase "critical mass".

Before the Iraqi invasion, there were some quiet stirrings.......small things like Qatari men voting on small, local issues. Lebanon had been moving to more a functional democracy. It was a beginning....small ones.

I think its true that the Iraqi invasion has derailed a lot of those small beginnings and destabilized the region. However, an interesting thing has happened. I don't know how significant it is but a guy that works for al Jazeera said that people have been calling the station asking how you have elections. He said apparently they had been on the web where they saw discussions re. last November's elections in the US and all the controversy surrounding them......how they came off without violence. That impressed them and they wanted to know how to have those kind of elections in their country. Obviously, we are at a very basic, early level here. And I don't know if the al Jazeera guy was blowing smoke but I thought it had some significance if true.
