re: If people power brings about Democracy, I doubt very much that those people will trade one form of despotism for another by going to a Taleban style government.

Wake up. It's not Taleban, but it's Sharia. Iraq is not Pleasant Valley, USA. It's a different country with different values, and those values are Muslim. You are naive, the Arab world does not conform to your "American Suburb" utopia. Women will be allowed to be beaten by their husbands. That's your Arab democracy. Get used to it.

re: If they start trying to acquire WMD or start funding and supporting terrorist attacks, while harboring known terrorists in their country, then I'd say they are making themselves a target for our military, yes.

Hell, we can't handle them now, what happens when we leave? Face reality.

re: So I would fully support an invasion of any country harboring or funding terrorist attacks against our country.

Would you support a 50% increase in your taxes? Would you enlist?

re: The U.S. should pull out all the stops to ensure that no more countries acquire WMD. Period. Then when it comes to countries aggressively opposed to our way of life, then that is doubly true of them, and I'd support an invasion of those countries to stop them.

How the hell are you going to pay for this, in lives and money? Whats your definition of WMD, just nuclear? Why not go after India, Afghanistan, North Korea, Russia, China? How are you going to protect us from everybody with your military aggression?

The only thing we are defending now is our phoney "super power" status. Super powers come and go, and we are on the way out. We need to make peace with world as it is... to try to reform the entire world in our image, with military power, is a fools errand.

Let them live there lives as they see fit. That's all I ask for myself.

John

If people power brings about Democracy, I doubt very much that those people will trade one form of despotism for another by going to a Taleban style government. However, if that were to happen, then the U.S. needs to respect the wishes of those countries to rule themselves as they please.

To really be a democracy you don't just have to have elections (and real ones not sham ones), you have to continue to have elections. If a facist or a communist or Taleban type gets himself elected and cancels all other elections than you aren't staying in a situation where the people of the country get to continue to rule themselves as they please.
