At the time there were several factions with communism as a basis. Some were in bed with the USSR/Stalin. Others(later) with Red China/Mao. Still others were Trotskyites(a favorite hate object for Stalin).
One can separate those that were infatuated with communism into those that were naive, those that believed that Marx explained much of the western worlds class system and its problems, those that were borderline nut cases(typically they believed that the ends justify the means), and those that worked actively for the USSR. The last category was greater than zero but not very large.
