I think their is quite a lot of doubt about the it. I've seen the "it" roundly debated on SI in debates that pretty much mirror the ideas I hear in 3d. I mean is the it Lamarckian? Is the it big jumps? Is the it small increments? What is the it? Is the it what we see in pepper moths and the birds of the Galapagos? Or is the it many things? I do not think you can underestimate the amount of controversy over the it- and THEN you have to add to the mix the people who think the it, whatever it is, is just WRONG, because it isn't the bible. I think the it is under fire from everyone- and I think that makes the it hard to teach. I don't know what you do about that. If I were modeling our system I'd look at what a first rate school system (maybe Singapore) is doing with science, and model our system on a winning model, rather than worrying about the it.
