The real test for a libertarian is whether a world of hired police and pure profit motive is one into which most people would insert their children. Do we just dump 18 year old orphans and mental defectives into the world and say, "Make it work!" What about kiddie porn or snuff films made in countries where it was legal to sell your life or that of your children for money (to feed your family, or, simply buy a new vacation home.) What if I bought a small pacific island and wanted to let people get murdered there? Flat fee: $2000. Get your wife, girlfriend, dad, boss, or anybody else there by any means and we off them. It's legal!

I can imagine all sorts of things in world without any regulation. What would be the motive to protect the environment or safely store nuclear isotopes? Would countries based upon a libertarian construct have any safety net for people who made bad choices or were unfortunate enough to be unlucky? I think a world like that would find human refuse to be a good component for pig feed. Quite cheap even.

but they also want all their drugs and hard porn and kinky sex to be totally legal and readily available.

I think you may be confusing "libertarian" and "libertine."

damm the public schools

Damn straight. Privatize em!

or the homeless

Religious institutions used to take care of that problem. Since the great liberal justice Hugo Black's (a Klansman, btw) decision, they've been handcuffed.

they also want all their drugs and hard porn and kinky sex to be totally legal and readily available.

You're mixing up libertarian with libertine.

Oh come on!!!! It IS a matter of selfishness. Libertarians want small government and even smaller taxes (damm the public schools or the homeless), but they also want all their drugs and hard porn and kinky sex to be totally legal and readily available.

No inherent selfishness in that combination. It would be selfish to say "cut my taxes", but "raise taxes on Bob and Jim", but it isn't selfish to say the government shouldn't grab so much of our money. In fact it could be argued as being selfish to say the government should take people's money and use it to support my agenda.

As for drugs, prostitution ect., libertarians aren't necessarily any more in to them then other people are. They think just think they should be legal. I've never used cocaine or marijuana. I've never even smoked a cigarette. But I don't think that people should get prison terms because they have such habits.
