Libertarians want very little or no regulation of drugs or sex or their private lives in general. Neither do libertines, of course.

That is true. That something is desired by both libertarians and libertines, however, does not make the two the same. Old folks and cats share a desire for quiet but old folks are not cats.

Libertines lead wild lives. They may be promiscuous drug users, as you suggest, and selfish, as you suggest. Libertarians want to maximize freedom and minimize government intrusions. It is a principled position on the role of government. Libertarians will uphold the freedom of others to do as they please as long as they don't injure others, even if those activities are not attractive to them. There is nothing either selfish or wanton about that.

Some libertines may be libertarians and some libertarians may be libertines but libertarian and libertine are two entirely different notions.
