if oil industry was holding off tankers in the ocean some place then ted kennedy missed it.. he and a number of senators did extensive investigations. they spent the better part of a couple of years going through oil companies supply books, pricing data etc. came up with nothing.

Those were terrible times. I had friends even accuse me of holding gas off the market.. some people go with the crowd and believe what they hear on tv and papers that's why we have lindy's thread. g try to get some balance.

i believe the allocation system was a gov. program. Each month the per cent would change on amount of gasoline a dealer or distributor etc could purchase based on base purchases in the prior year. How it was distributor was made by the oil industry.. at first we delivered the alloted amount and the station would sell out same day and remain empty the rest of the week/month. Then it was adjusted to full loads of gasoline where possible for delivery divided into total gasoline allotment. Dealers then became better business men and adjusted hours of operation at the pumps to at least keep customers coming into stations daily otherwise their places would have been empty.

system then got more complicated with new stations and no base volume, etc. these had to be approved by pricing manger or allocation manger who forwarded reports to gov. Also gov would give set asides for added vol to hardship cases,, not dealer hardships but usually commercial business, gov locations , etc. this volume i believe came out of a top side number controlled by the gov.
