Yes they have - but they are an important part of the US economy. This is one of the painful adjustments that must be made.

Detroit has left the building? Detroit itself is somewhat of a dump except around downtown but the surrounding suburbs have one of the highest concentration of college graduate engineers in the country, many with doctorate degrees. Most GM and Ford vehicles are still designed right here, as are many Chrysler vehicles. You would not believe some of the high tech sh#$ they are doing here! We just don't build many of them here anymore.

You can't even get in to see personnel without at least a bachelors degree.

Very few people understand how big autos are. Thousands of suppliers, MANY millions of jobs around the country.
