I started on a research contract mid last year, and still have a great deal to learn. The immunologist I'm collaborating with, Rod Dunbar, _is_ an expert. I am an all-purpose modeller, trying to be useful. It is a very lively group, doing all sorts of good things. I don't have much contact with the telemetry group, but they seem to be very creative. Your idea about direct neural sensing for communications has one fatal flaw - our thoughts are a jumble of impressions, associations, subconscious reactions etc., and unless ordered by being put into spoken (or written) words, all sorts of unintended messages could be transmitted. Some things are better left unsaid, etc. Imagine you are communicating with an attractive woman, and you happen to reflect momentarily on the excellence of her breasts. Such messages are not always well-received. Although I have to say I'm quite intrigued by the idea of a button that conveys one's state of sexual interest. It would save a lot of wasted time and damaged hearing in singles bars (not for me, I'm too old for that sort of thing). Like wearing your heart on your sleeve. On the more down-to-earth topic of sediment transport, the other half of my time at the moment is being devoted to a contract with Metrowater to simulate the deposition of Zn attached to sediment, discharged into the harbours in storm events. Also coliform bacteria levels near bathing beaches. To be honest, the sediment modelling is quite a headache. My model is pitifully simple-minded compared with the complexity of the real processes, and matching measured data takes a lot of fancy footwork. We met when you were selling a house 8 or 9 years ago. Remuera, according to my wife. We chatted about the stock market. I think it was just before it all turned to shit. You had a fortune in Global Crossing shares, if my memory serves me well. I think I was being a bit cagey about the market, but as it turns out I didn't heed my own words of caution. Seeya Gib
