There will be rapid developments in solar in coming years. Efficienies at converting light and heat energy into useful electricity will approach 50%. Nanotechnology is going to really push solar forward. I'll see if I can put together a primer for the thread on nanotech solar research. Some of the advancements are very interesting. Such as taking advantage of a wider range of the visible and invisible spectrum.

Cost alone should by no means be the deciding factor...
Look at how much money was poured into nuclear energy, with the backers even bragging about how the electricity generated from nuke plants would be "too cheap to meter"... Ha! Nothing turned out to be further from the truth, yet for some strange reason, we still have those among us who would turn their backs on the sun.
