H5N1 spreads more easily when hosts are not as sick. More H5N1 in more people is not cause for optimism.

Bird flu in Vietnam is really a tale of two cities. While the fatality rate in the north may be dropping, the reported cases in the south are still all dying. There have been no reported discharges.

However, the real case fatality rate in southern Vietnam is hard to calculate because the latest data reported in the NY Times indicates that 78% of the H5N1 cases in southern Vietnam are reported as false negatives!
