Your friend is fortunate, but it helps if people can prepare themselves mentally for such a relationship before hand. My best friend in high school broke his neck in a diving accident when he was 18. He actually had an exceptional recovery, to where he could walk with a cane. Twenty years later however, he fell into a deep depression when he started losing control of his bodily functions and committed suicide. In the case of Terri Schiavo I think it is also important to consider that the level of commitment from parents quite often exceeds that of spouses. * * *
