Hi Grainne,

re: "People CAN stop global warming,"

From my knowledge as a geologist, an economic geologist, not a historical geologist but having had classes in the latter and sort of knowing how the earth works, I think <g> , warming and cooling periods throughout geologic history are common and cyclic. That is if a person accepts geologic science and I do.

So where human and their current activities enter into it, is imo, that they will exacerbate the warming cycle and speed things up to an uninhabitable condition for us. I can't see the opposite, but maybe it could..

Maybe what caused the great extinction of the dinos, was they became so prevalent, being primary plant eaters, they created so much "gas" that a similar phenomenon as today was created. They created a "global warming situation" FASTER than they could ADOPT to. I don't know. I have never seen this theory out there though. The key words being "FASTER than being able to ADOPT TO.. That is if a person believes in evolution as I do, along with geologic science.

Maybe OUR activities NOW will also create a situation, faster than we can adopt to.. If it was "natural" and slow, maybe we could. By "natural", I mean any abnormal situation created by "ourselves" that is unsustainable whether "ourselves" means human or dinos or ground squirrels. <g>

But I don't think one species can turn this stuff 'off and on' like a faucet, from cold to hot. But one species might be able to keep adding a little 'hot' to the "frog in the pot" (themselves) until they are cooked.. <g>.

But one thing, I think I know, is that "Mother Earth" is a great MOM with great understanding and is a great "leveler" if needed. If some of her "children" are not smart enough to control or govern themselves.
