Slow Lane, I found last nights listen to Don fascinating. The implications for the auto industry are startling. This guy has become the one beacon of steady common sense in the market today. My single holding of Oil Sands is Connacher - fortunately bought around $.70. I have been waiting for a dip - even raised a bit of cash a bit back. Now I am not so sure such an opportunity is coming.

TheSlowLane,

Thanks for Don's call.

Don confirmed my motivation for investing in oil sands stocks:

*major oil companies, flush with cash, will increasingly see the oil sands as one of the only ways to replace stable reserves in a favorable location

*the SEC will have to eventually capitulate on valuing the oil sands reserves, partly in the name of national security WRT energy supply.

Both of the above means that:

*there is not much downside in oil sands stocks
*over time, there will be large deals done in oil sands names

Don also raised the idea of buying refiners. Valero, Tesoro (VLO, and the MLP: VLI) are a good way to play the profit potential of refining heavier oil, as well as PCA.TO (PCZ) and HSE.TO. Tesoro (TSO) was also mentioned in the call.

I posted a few other MLPs here, including MLPs with refinery exposure.

The Q&A was interesting, with some questions on replacing the NG input in processing the oil sands. Don mentioned Suncor's coking plant as a way to produce fuel that can replace NG.

There is something going on in thy oil sands almost every week now. This last week we got a decent move in PBG.TO and that validates my belief that there is enough going on in oil sands names that you really have to stay in these names to benefit.
