re: Unfortunately, the electoral college helps to make a third party difficult. And the GOP ain't about to give up the EC after it gave them an election in 2000 and with the country so evenly divided.

I'm not sure the EC is THE problem, I think that the getting on the ballot through the local systems is a bigger obstacle. But the third party thing keeps sticking in my mind... I think, if it wasn't effectively painted as radical and bizarre (by Rove and the Dems), it could draw votes from both sides.

As far as the EC, the Reps almost got nailed in '04. Kerry carries Ohio by one vote (or 100,000 votes), and the Reps lose the election but win the Pop vote. Imagine the whining...

I'm surprised they haven't tried to change the system.

I don't know what will work but something needs to happen sooner rather than later. I just posted an article about the new prison system in Afghanistan from a UK newspaper. It seems the US military is using Afghanistan as a military/prison outpost, safely out of the view of everyone. We only know what's going on in this country.......the farther from DC, the worse it gets.

A third party would be nice. I had some hopes that Perot would be able to pull it off, but he let his ego get in the way. Personally, I think Populism is due for a come back tour, both current parties are pretty much corporate parties. As Kinky Friedman put it, "Today, Texans have no choice for their leadership except paper or plastic". This applies not only to Texas, but the whole country.

We will see how the Kinkster does in his run for governor of Texas. His stance is very Populist. I think he has a good shot. Having a sense of humor and name recognition doesn't hurt...
