Ted, I'll sum up all of the Chosun Dynasty's last 50 years in power in a few sentences. Basically those in power signed off a lot of their authority to the Japanese. The reasons are complex, but in a nutshell Korea as an agrarian society never stood a chance. Meanwhile, Japan was one of the first Asian countries to embrace Western ideals and technology. Among those ideals, of course, was imperialism, which Japan saw as necessary in order to survive in a rapidly industrializing world. Korea just happened to be right there, and the rest is bitter history. By the way, as you can imagine Japan is still in denial over their occupation of Korea. Two words that should silence any Japanese revisionist: "comfort women." Tenchusatsu
