I've stopped doing research for rightists on SI" How convenient. This allows you to say whatever you want with no regards to whether it is true or not. And I am not ignoring anything. I ama a person who has gone through the hoops to get a gun. Your claim that they are so readily available was not the case in my case. And with a national waiting period where a purchaser undergoes a background check your claim appears to be incorrect. Not surprising you won't back it up. "That's why they watch FOX." Idiotic comment from one who makes apparently untrue charges with no back up. I thought you were a notch up from the frescas and screachers of the world. "I do not know of any law that requires individuals who sell guns to notify anyone. " There is DEFINATELY one in CA. Sounds like you just like to argue the emotions of the issue, and that reality really has no place in your "argument". "Coupled with guns lost due to theft" Only an idiot would refuse to report this. If you were robbed, would you report it? If so, where in the heck did you get the idea that if someone's gun was stolen the would keep it to themselves. I would say a gun is one of the more likely things to be reported if stolen. "illegal and 'gray area' sales, etc, there is no way for law enforcement to know who has guns, what kind, etc." Why do people like you think criminals will follow ANY of your suggestions to make it easier for law enforcement? Your "arguments" are so empty I have to question your intelligence (or at least knowledge of the guns and gun laws). Law enforcement will NEVER know when criminals have guns until the criminals are arrested. KNOWING THAT, some folks do trust themselves AND have the capabilities to handle a gun. Thank God there is some sense left in America and these people are allowed this RIGHT. "Arrogance is in the eye of the beholder." When you tell someone else to conform to your view, it is arrogance. Note that I have strong beliefs about my rights and capabilities, but do not force that on you. You can do whatever you want imo as long as you are not hurting others. You have no right to hurt others imo. Neither do I (unless I am threatened). I believe all have the right to defend themselves. They don't have to, but they have the right to. "Since gun ownership directly endangers my family, it is indeed an issue I have a valid interest in" But you have an obligation to know the facts imo. Just spitting out falsehoods that support your view does nobody any good. Even yourself. I would say that if you truly feel that gun ownership endangers your family, you may want to consider getting some training so you don't show up at a gun fight without a gun. As far as other families kids shooting your kids, I recommend that you do meet their parents and have a sense as to who your kids hang with and what they are up to. Your choice, but it would be prudent imo. "and those who don't want their families endangered by their proliferation." Proliferation does not endanger your family imo. There are already nearly 300,000,000 handgubns in America. The real danger is guns in the hands of a criminal. I am satisfied that CA is hard on people that commit crimes with guns. And if one tries to commit a crime on MY FAMILY with a gun, I would rather be on equal footing. In CA you must: 1) Register the gun 2)You CANNOT sell a gun without fillijng out complete and accurate information on who is buying the gun. It must be done through a licensed dealer. You CANNOT sell a gun legally without reporting it. 3) Store it properly so it cannot be accessed by those who should not accesss (LOCKED). 3) You will go to jail big time if you use a gun to commit a crime. In the USA you must: 1) Undergo a background check to purchase a gun. The serial number is recorded with the owners name. 2) I BELIEVE you must report private gun sales jsut as you do in CA. Not positive of this, but I know as a CA resident I cannot go to some other state and buy a gun (legally). Focus your fear and concern on the criminal. That makes it harder for criminals, which should be the goal of all Americans. And try to have some faith in your fellow citizen. The arrogant condescending type have a tough time doing this. But our country reached the greatness it has through the freedom of it's people. Not throguh control and restriction. You are completely in the right to have a choice to get a gun, but choose not too. If you think you cannot keep it safe, think you might commit suicide with it, might accidenty shoot your wife/dog/kid/neighbor/friend, would rather be raped/mugged/killed/have a child abducted, etc. than defend your self that is perfectly ok with me. I would never tell you what to do in that regard. But try to get the facts straight. It will help you with your own decision making, and stop you from making silly excuses like: " I've stopped doing research for rightists on SI, because they ignore the results that don't match their preconceived notions. That's why they watch FOX." Makes you appear prejudiced and illinformed/dishonest.
