Am embarrassed to admit that in that cycle I was one of the people saying "But it IS different this time". Things change so quickly and now we have excess power generation capability out the wazoo. That's why when I listen to what the analysts say about peak oil, oil prices going to the moon, and the like, I look at the inventory levels and chuckle. The analysts and media don't have a clue and anyone who actually goes back and reads articles from prior cycles as you did realizes just how ridiculous most of those articles and analysis are.

Funniest thing is that the one comment I made it that post will probably end up being proven exactly wrong in the long run. Coal will probably end up being the major fuel source for power generation and NG will be used for heating buildings
(since you don't really want to use coal to heat houses). The power companies will most likely have to be forced to build cleaner plants.
