Some people born in the Southern states might differ on that...the US War of Nothern Aggresion (aka War Between the States, Civil War) of 1860-1865 had large numbers of casualties, displacements, theft of lands and property, etc.

Some Southerns fled to Brazil, Canada, or the Western US.

*****

The other prespective is that many people in the US or their ancestors DID have to flee from Europe/Asia/ where ever, so just like your friends, the effects of war feature strongly in their family history.

Being in Silicon Valley, easily as many as 15% the people I work with eihter had to flee or their parents had to flee.
These are not the economic migrants, and these are the ones whio might be willing to dicuss their story---

Cambodia, VietNam, El Salvador, Iraq, Iran, PRC (form Commies), Taiwan (yes from KMT), Phillipines (from Fredinand Marcos) Bulgaria (from both Commies & Nazis - the guy's grand mother was cut in half and throw in a lake), Estonia, Poland, Chekslovakia, Moldova, Ukarine, and Cuba.

In another generation or two this prespective will fade...

With my comments now and then I may be leaving a Love'em'all/flowerchild/sleazy taste behind. I hope anyhow it is just my own overdose of self-criticism...

I do not know how I would behave in these exceptional (exceptional? who's exception here?) circumstances. Probably would fit perfectly the role of an average middle-of-the-road a*hole.

However, why average middle-of-the-road a*holes die in wars, get killed / pillaged / raped in Darfour right this very moment, get mowed down in few days (order of magnitude 8000) in Srebrenica, is not the problem, that's eating me right now. This is (just, just?) a fact - can't be a problem anymore, sadly.

My problem is the human being on the other side of the looking glass: safe bet another average middle-of-the-road a*hole, who was told, some big Dodo is on his side and was then given a Kalashnikow.

end of rant

DJ

PS: this question of why human is supposed to be good - and not evil, the ethical anti-matter wonder - is probably a thou plus years old. There's been answers suggested, several, I guess. I just have yet to find a satisfactory one.

>>The US has never taken a real punch<<

Marcos, we get invaded all the time. Especially by your compadres from México.

But this time they've gone too far, with a direct assault on our top flight research and engineering jobs! It's really outrageous when a few poor undocumented immigrant high school kids can defeat our best college teams like this. The U.S. Commerce Department should slap on hefty tariffs anti-dumping penalties to compensate the affected Americans against this kind of totally unfair competition... ;)
