Washington ordered that Hessian captives would be treated as human beings with the same rights of humanity for which Americans were striving. The Hessians ... were amazed to be treated with decency and even kindness. At first they could not understand it." The same policy was extended to British prisoners.

What is not said is in the moments just prior to their captives surrender our troops shoot to kill. In the moments immediately after their surrender our troops are on full guard and ready to shoot to kill at the first and smallest provocation.

The "kind" treatment begins after the prisoners are disarmed, debriefed and safely interred.
