One of the interesting aspects of this to me is how many people whom I have known on SI for a long time and believe to be intelligent and sane have bought the line that she is functioning. I keep reading hoping to figure out how that happened. I don't think the MSM are to blame other than the amount of air time they've given to this, which includes people claiming she communicates or that brain tissue could have grown back since that CAT scan in '02. The evidence on this is very one sided and most of the TV I've watched has been skeptical of those claims. I caught some of Scarborough yesterday and he was clearly sympathetic to them but others are clearly not. I think it was Dan Abrams yesterday who interviewed one of the neurologists who examined her for the court. He was asked how the parents could believe what they believe and he sympathetically attributed it to understandable wishful thinking. Re the Mayo clinic neurologist, he attributed it to the fact that he hadn't actually looked at the test results, just met with Terri, that he had an agenda, and that he never actually said that she had a functioning brain, merely tried to finesse the label for the diagnosis (in a way that would exclude it from the Florida law--my inference). I really wish I could understand what my intelligent and sane SI buds are thinking. I've had the TV news on mute in the background all day and I see that other news is now being covered, no more all-Schiavo TV. BTW, one of the things that doctor mentioned was that an MRI, as you said, shows no more than the CAT scan plus that, at the time he was evaluating her, the only way to get a PET scan (I think it was) was to take her to New York. He didn't elaborate about the scarcity. Can you interpret that last bit for me?
