Mostly I thought Clinton was fine during his first term. I used to joke that the '96 election was between two Republicans! Of course they were REAL Republicans, not these extremists who have hijacked the GOP.

I think Dole would have surprised people - he was not a right wing ideologue and didn't like the religious right. I thought he would have a similar agenda as Clinton, but would be more effective in working with Congress. Who knows?

Dole is smart, willing to change his mind, and much more of a moderate than most people knew. I thought the '96 election was between two solid candidates. This was unlike '00 were I thought both candidates were terrible (I voted 3rd party in 2000). Luckily my vote didn't matter in 2000 since I live in California, or I would have regretted not voting for Gore.

I was very happy with Kerry in '04 - and very disappointed in Dole when he attacked Kerry about his purple heart. I wrote Dole a letter and Dole did apologize to Kerry (I'm sure I had nothing to do with the apology, but I bet Dole received many letters). Still if Dole had any courage he would have supported Kerry - that might have made a difference. Dole must know Bush is mendacious and incompetent (same goes with McCain who I will never support again).

I'm pretty mad - I doubt I will ever support any Republican who supported Bush in '04. Even Chuck Hagel will have to work hard to get my vote. I'm glad Danforth spoke out this week, but I wish he had spoken out last October.
