When you try to stir up trouble, and use posts from 1998, sometimes you don't realize that at that time we felt more comfortable to joke around. Now that everything in posts is taken down as "evidence" we all have learned to be more circumspect in what we post, and whom we talk to (or at least some of us have).

Nice of you to try to stir up trouble, but the only people who will get stirred up by that will be the folks who are stirred up already, and who sent you over here. But perhaps this is just a bonding experience for you and the few people who would care what I posted back in 1998. It's amazing that you and your friends care so much.

So silly to do such things (imo). It's hard to imagine why a grown man would spend his time on this.

And some folks wonder why other people don't want to talk to them? Well, keeping files on people that stretch back to 1998 is just plain weird, and using them constantly and thinking that is normal is even weirder.

FWIW, I don't subscribe to any national- or ethnic-based bashing full of gross exaggerations and lies, from any quarter. I have not seen any rhetoric like that from Ionesco since I first came across her on SI subsequent to this episode. I assume that means she has rethought her position or simply decided to hold her tongue when she feels like teeing off on a particular group. I don't know, that's up to her.

Disregarding the authorship of the post, I have to say that visiting Verdun, where the French did hold off the Germans on their own at a crucial time, is a very moving experience. Post-WW2, all the countries who created and possessed nuclear and biological weapons seem to have sold various pieces and parts and related material to various nasty parties. As a fingerpointing exercise, it strikes me as a circular pissing contest.

Morality - too big a subject to go into here, certainly not one that fits in a sentence or two. I find aspects good and bad in both American and European attitudes. I would never idolize one over the other or discount one against the other.

That's why I'm not a hate-talk radio host - just no interest in taking absolute hateful views against anybody except ignorant bigots who take absolute hateful views. I have a new game in the US - turn on the AM radio dial, find a talk show and count the seconds until they bash somebody and tell me why they are SO awful I should despise them.

I haven't made it past 30 seconds yet. With the more strident hate-talk hosts, 5-10 seconds is the norm unless they are on a commercial.
